Travelling

The city of Bochum is at the heart of the Ruhrgebiet metropolitan area in Germany. The region encompasses several big cities with over 5 million inhabitants. The Ruhrgebiet extends from the river Rhine near Cologne to the city of Dortmund in the east. At its south side, it reaches the beautiful rolling hills of  Bergisches Land.

Bochum can be reached by high speed trains from all major airports in Germany. The travel time from the airport Düsseldorf is 40 min, from the airport Frankfurt 2h.

Getting to Bochum

Arrival by Plane

From your arrival gate look out for the SkyTrain, which will bring you every 5 minutes to the Railway station Airport (Fernbahnhof). There you will find a ticket office and ticket machines of the Deutsche Bahn, where you can buy a ticket for the train to Bochum. The trains run every 30 minutes during the day. A train schedule for the 25th July and the 31st July will be provided here in summer 2009.

from Frankfurt International Airport FRA

From your arrival gate look out for direction to the Railway station Airport (Fernbahnhof). There you will find a ticket office of the Deutsche Bahn, where you can buy a ticket for the ICE high speed train to Bochum. It is advised to look at the train schedule via the Deutsche Bahn website and to book your train tickets and a seat reservation in advance. High speed trains leave almost every two hours. It takes 2 hours to Bochum. A train schedule for the 25th July and the 31st July will be provided here in summer 2009.

from Köln-Bonn Internatioal Airport

From your arrival gate look out for direction to the Railway station Airport (Fernbahnhof). There you will find a ticket office of the Deutsche Bahn, where you can buy a ticket for the train to Bochum. Trains leave almost every hour. It takes about one hour to get to Bochum. A train schedule for the 25th and the 31st July will be provided here in summer 2009.

Arrival by Train

Bochum is a station in the high speed train network of Germany. Please visit the website of the Deutsche Bahn for ticketing and connections.

Arrival by Car

The simplest route to the Ruhr-University Bochum is via the Highway-Intersection Bochum - Witten. Follow A43, direction Wuppertal up to exit Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität. You follow the Universitätsstraße in direction Universität / Zentrum up to exit Uni - Mitte (ca. 2 km), choose the left lane and you reach the main entrance with visitor parking.

You reach exit A43 Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität as follows:

from the North (Recklinghausen or Dortmund and Essen):

  • Dortmund and Essen: A40 (B1) up to Kreuz Bochum, A43 in direction Wuppertal
  • Münster, Recklinghausen: A43 up to Kreuz Bochum Witten, leave the highway and follow direction Wuppertal up to exit Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität.

from the South (Wuppertal, Hagen, or Kamener Kreuz, Kreuz Dortmund-Unna):

  • Wuppertal: A43 up to Kreuz Bochum-Witten, exit Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität
  • Frankfurt / Hagen und Kamener Kreuz / Kreuz Dortmund-Unna: from Westhofener Kreuz A45 direction Dortmund-Nordwest up to Kreuz Dortmund-Witten (ca. 7 km) exit to A44 direction Bochum up to Kreuz Bochum-Witten (ca. 10 km) exit to A43 direction Wuppertal up to exit <Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität (ca. 300 m)

from the Sheffield-Ring from the west (Essen, Duisburg):

  • Essen: A40 up to exit Bochum-Stahlhausen, turn right direction BO-Zentrum, after 200 m turn right in the Donezk-Ring, which continues into the Oviedo-Ring, follow up to exit Bochum-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität(ca. 4,5 km), turn right into the Universitätsstraße Richtung BO-Querenburg / Ruhr-Universität up to exit Uni - Mitte (about 2 km).
  • In case of traffic jam on the A43 the access via the Sheffieldring is also recommended when coming from north (Recklinghausen or Dortmund):
  • Recklinghausen: A43 up to exit Bochum-Gerthe turn right direction BO-Grumme, after about 1 km the Sheffield-Ring starts
  • Dortmund: A40 (B1) up to exit Bochum-Harpen turn right direction BO-Querenburg, after about 150 m the Sheffield-Ring starts.

From the main station Bochum you reach us via the underground U35 direction Bochum-Querenburg up to the stop Universität (price range A). The subway runs on working days every 5 minutes and the trip takes 9 minutes.
